Guarana Soda, A Traditional Brazilian Pastime

Guarana comes from the wild plant Paullinia Cupana, found in the Brazilian rainforest.

The plant yields a red berry. It’s seeds are used to produce soda as well as other guarana products such as teas, juices and candies to name a few.

The Brazilian word guarana means “fruit like the eyes of the people.” It is derived from the Tupi-Guarani word warana and perfectly describes the guarana’s unique appearance.

Guarana soda tends to have a sweet fruity flavor. It has a golden-caramel color. Like most sodas it is carbonated and its ingredients include sugar and corn syrup . It can be purchased in bottles and cans.

You’ll find guarana soda throughout the country; at Brazilian restaurants, sports venues, schools and virtually every Brazilian refrigerator.

Guarana has characteristics similar to caffeine. Therefore, guarana is a stimulant and is used in many energy drinks and diet supplements.

However, it is most popular as a soda. There are many different Brazilian guarana soda brands such as Kuat, Brazilia, Schin, Bawls and Triunfo.

However, the granddaddy of them all is without a doubt, Guarana Antarctica.

Guarana Antarctica was founded in 1921 by Companhia Anarctica Paulista. But has since been purchased by Anheuser-Busch.

Guarana Antarctica is the official sponsor of the Brazilian National Soccer team. It is far and away the most dominant and loved soda brand in Brazil.
