All About Champurradas, the Sweet and Crunchy Guatemalan Cookies

You’re having a few friends come over for coffee and you’re looking for something to go with it. That’s when one of them suggests champurradas.  That sounds interesting but you have no idea what it is.

1. What Are Champurradas?

Champurradas is a cookie that originated in Guatemala. They are located in bakeries and stores all over the place there and they’re pretty cheap to buy.

To give you an idea of what they are like, it’s as if someone mixed together the best things about a biscotti and a sugar cookie and made something new.

They’re crunchy and flat which makes them the perfect thing to dunk into a cup of coffee.

2. What are They Made of?

If you’re not located in Guatemala and still want to give this unique cookie a try don’t worry. They’re not too hard to make and only require a few ingredients. Head to the store and pick up:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Unsalted butter
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • Seaseme seeds
  • Cooking spray

See, not many at all. In fact, you probably have most of these ingredients sitting at home already. Next, we’re going to tell you how you can combine all these ingredients to make the cookies.

3. Baking Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 and take out your electric stand mixer. In the bowl, you’re going to add 2 cups of flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Once you’ve stirred them together, you’ll put in the 10 tablespoons of butter, 2 eggs, and 3 tablespoons of vanilla.

Beat all this on medium settings until you’ve got dough. Scoop the dough onto a greased sheet about 2 inches apart. Press them flat with your thumb and brush over the tops of them with beaten egg yolks.

Sprinkle the tops with a generous amount of sesame seeds and pop them in the oven for about 20 minutes or until they start turning brown.

Let them cool and voila! You’ll have the perfect cookies for dunking into your morning coffee or tea.
