A Guide to Puerto Rican Drinks
Two drinks define Puerto Rico. The piña colada was created in San Juan in 1954 and is still the island’s official cocktail; coquito is the coconut eggnog made by the bottle every Christmas, often with a splash of pitorro, the homemade rum cured with fruit. The rest of the year the island runs on café con leche in the morning, a cold Coco Rico or malta from the colmado in the afternoon and fresh guarapo pressed from sugarcane on the roadside.
