Latin America drinks its fruit. A batido or licuado is the everyday smoothie, blended with milk or water and sold at every market; jugos naturales run from lulo and maracuyá to guava and papaya; and the lemonades, made with coconut milk in Colombia, panela in Venezuela and condensed milk in Brazil, are a category of their own. The recipes below cover the ones you can make with fruit you can actually find.

A Guide to Latin American Smoothies & Juices

The fruit is the recipe. Maracuyá, passion fruit, blends into the sharpest smoothie on the continent; lulo, the orange Colombian fruit that tastes like citrus and rhubarb, is crushed rather than blended for a lulada. The lemonades are where each country shows its hand: coconut milk in Colombia, panela in Venezuela, condensed milk and whole limes in Brazil. Mexico's aguas frescas, jamaica and tamarindo among them, are the juice-bar equivalent, and aguapanela with lime is the simplest of all.
