What Is Ponche Navideño?

Ponche navideño, also known as Ponche Mexicano or simply, Ponche, is a Mexican punch made by simmering Mexican fruits with sugar and spices.

It is traditionally served on Christmas Eve and during Las Posadas, the nine-day celebration leading up to Christmas.

Ponche Navideño is served hot and can be combined with brandy or tequila to create an alcoholic version of this festive drink.

Ponche literally translates to punch, and the traditional Mexican drink is something like a warm fruit punch, similar to spiced apple cider.

But, rather than apples and oranges, this delicious drink is made from sweet and sour tejocotes, guavas, tamarind pods, and piloncillo, a raw cane sugar.

If you cannot find piloncillo at your local store, you can also substitute dark brown sugar.

The Mexican Christmas fruit punch can be served immediately, but it is best served after refrigerating in a glass jar for a day or two. The longer the drink sits, the more the flavors meld together.

The heavy fruit content in ponche navideño packs it full of vitamins A, B, and C, meaning that the warm drink gives a strong boost to the immune system.

Other drinks similar to traditional ponche navideño include Mexican hot chocolate, hibiscus-cinnamon tea, and mulled wine. Another popular alternative is champurrado or chocolate atole

History of Ponche Navideño

There are over 100 different recipes for ponche navideño across Mexico, all variations of hot fruit punch mixed with spices.

In Oaxaca, the drink is made with milk and eggs, and in Mexico City, pineapples and lime are added to the mix.

All these recipes tie back to the punch brought to Mexico by the Spaniards, then mixed with native Mexican fruits and traditions.

The Spanish ponche tradition dates back to trade with India when their version of the punch was brought to Europe for the first time.

This punch was made with palm wine, sugar, lemon, and tea, simmered together to make a hot, aromatic drink.

The Spanish adapted this drink, which was then further adapted when they brought it to Mexico in the 1600s.

The Spaniards brought the ponche navideño tradition along with the tradition of celebrating Las Posadas, which translates to “the inn.”

Las Posadas is a time when people celebrate the Biblical story of Mary and Joseph, specifically how they searched for a place to rest while Mary was pregnant. Each night represents one month of Mary’s pregnancy.

According to tradition, carolers go from house to house asking if they can stay at people’s homes and are denied entry until they reach a designated house.

Here, the party begins, and ponche navideño is served along with empanadas, tamales, and other holiday foods.
